It is with great sadness that we confirm the death of Lelona Thembakazi Fufu, a Rhodes University BSc honors student who was due to graduate on Thursday (12 April) evening.
According to the family Ms Fufu’s death was confirmed by the police on Friday afternoon. She was last seen on Thursday at about 14h00 when she left her home in Motherwell, Port Elizabeth, to hitchhike to Grahamstown, where she was to prepare for the Thursday evening graduation ceremony.
The family, who had arranged to travel to Grahamstown later in the afternoon lost contact with her after 14h30, and reported her missing to the police after 19h00 on Thursday following a fruitless search.
Family members, fellow students and the Rhodes community, who gather annually at this time of the year to celebrate and honour student achievements, are heartbroken by the loss.
Rhodes Vice-Chancellor, Dr Saleem Badat, staff and students, offer their condolences to the family and wish them strength during this trying time.

This is truelly a tragedy and my heart goes out to her family but I must ask why she was hitchhiking to Grahamstown when her family was going through later anyway? None the less it is extremely sad, I send my condolences to her family and friends, may she rest in peace.

I find it quite insensitive for you to leave a comment like that a day after Lelona’s body was found. It makes your condolences to the family seem very insincere and in my opinion this was very distasteful of you. Go learn to be a better human being!
